The Super Nintendo is home to a lot of classic RPG’s. Some of my favorites were Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. Most of them were marketed well and very successful. Unfortunately, like most of the games we enjoy, Earthbound wasn’t a commercial success. Nintendo did their best. They tried to grab people’s attention by including a strategy guide with every copy. They even created an ad that featured scratch and sniff stickers. The scents kept you guessing, but it sadly wasn’t enough to lure in people.
Tidus is a famous underwater sport Blitzball player in the high-tech city of Zanarkand. During a Blitzball tournament, the city is attacked by a giant creature known as, “Sin”. As the city is being destroyed by Sin, a mysterious man appears before Tidus and utters the words, “This is your story”. They then both get drawn into the world of Spira.
Star Ocean: The Second Story was released in 1999. It was published by Enix (who is now merged with Square) and developed by Tri-Ace. The studio is known for making unique battle systems like the one featured in Valkyrie Profile. The PlayStation game Star Ocean: The Second Story is no different. It features unique gameplay, great music, and an engaging story. Unfortunately, the game was overshadowed by the mega popular Final Fantasy VII from Square.
I was excited to play Dead or Alive 4 with my brother on the Xbox 360. It was the game that made me purchase the system. The gameplay, sound, control, and graphics were amazing. I was a big fan of the series from the original PlayStation version. I thought to myself “Wow! If Dead or Alive looks good, imagine when they make RPG’s on the system.
You see, I am a huge fan of JRPG’s! Some of my favorites were Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Grandia 2, Xenosaga Series, Baten Kaitos, Valkyrie Profile, Radiata Stories, and the Final Fantasy series just to name a few. Much to my dismay, many of my favorite series have been forgotten by either the company closing down, or because they weren’t like their predecessors. Star Ocean: The Last hope was released for the XBOX 360 and later the PlayStation 3. I couldn’t wait to play it but I shut it off after an hour. The charm was gone.
One of most anticipated games coming on March 13th is Tales of Graces F. It’s a rare occurrence that we get the Tales series in America. I hope it is a commercial success. This is one of my favorite Role Playing Game series and games overall. Hopefully this release will renew interest in this series.
